NEW ARTICLE! Wings and beer. Pretty classic combination. But if this were Colorado, these wings wouldn't legally be wings at all. They'd be a sandwich. On this day in 1855, up to 3,000 Portland Mainers gathered in protest in front of city hall. A few years earlier their teetotaling mayor, Neal Dow, had made Maine the first state to ban alcohol. They had just learned that he was secretly storing a bunch of barrels of rum in the city vaults. The rum was for legal distribution to pharmacies, but the rioters didn't know that. The militia was called in, shots were fired, and one protester was killed. The event contributed to the repeal of the alcohol ban the next year. A few years ago three Portland distilleries, including @liquid_riot, started making a rum (pictured) to commemorate the event
